Best Wide Angle Lens For Canon EOS

Best Wide Angle Lens For Canon EOS

Choosing the Best Wide Angle Lens For Canon EOS for your needs can be tricky. Canon’s EOS EF (Electro-Focus) lens mount stretches back to 1987 and its EF-S mount has been around since 2003, so there are hundreds of different lenses available for the system. New lenses are still being added to the lineup all the time, as well.

The good news is that Canon’s long history of making great glass means you can find a wide variety of lenses that will fit almost any photographic situation. The bad news is that it can take quite a while to research all of those lenses and decide which ones will work best for you.

To make it a little easier, we’ve selected some of the very Best Wide Angle Lens For Canon EOS. Below is the list of lenses:

1. Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens

Features

  • Brand: Canon
  • Lens Type: Wide Angle, Telephoto
  • Compatible Mountings: Canon RF
  • Camera Lens Description: 18 Millimeters
  • Maximum Focal Length: 105 Millimeters

The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens is a wide to short telephoto zoom lens with a constant f/4 maximum aperture and image stabilization. It is the second RF-mount lens introduced by Canon, and it’s a highly attractive option for EOS R owners in need of an all-purpose lens.

The RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM has a lot going for it, but I find it to be a bit too large for my liking. The barrel is about 1 inch longer than the similar EF 24-105mm F4 L IS II USM lens, although it is also slightly narrower. And while the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM weighs 1.5 ounces less than its EF equivalent, it is still 16 ounces heavier than the much older EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens and almost twice as heavy as the new Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art Lens.

But what makes this lens extra heavy is that most of it reside behind the camera mount, including the zoom mechanism and image stabilization units. That makes balancing this lens on your camera especially challenging when using your right hand to hold the camera body.

2. Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens

Features

  • Brand: Canon
  • Lens Type: Standard
  • Compatible Mountings: Canon EF
  • Camera Lens Description: 50 Millimeters
  • Maximum Focal Length: 50 Millimeters

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is the top-of-the-line standard focal length lens in the Canon EF line, with an f/1.2 aperture. The large maximum aperture allows photographers to isolate their subjects from distracting backgrounds by rendering them out of focus and to capture images in extremely low light situations without using flash or other artificial lighting.

In addition, the fast focusing speed of the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM makes it ideal for use as a portrait lens by allowing photographers to take advantage of shallow depth-of-field effects and selective focus.

The lens is equipped with a ring ultrasonic motor (USM) which ensures quick and silent autofocus operation and enables full-time manual focus override by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens barrel. Like all L-series lenses, this high-performance beauty is constructed to exacting standards and is dust and moisture resistant.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 80mm when attached to a 1.6x crop sensor camera, such as the Canon EOS 60D DSLR and it has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 64mm.

3. Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM

The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM is the first RF mount lens that was released alongside the Canon EOS R camera. It is designed to be the perfect match for this new mirrorless system, and kick-off for a whole new series of RF lenses.

The L designation means this lens is built to professional standards, as it’s part of the Canon Luxury line. The price tag reflects that: this is not an inexpensive lens by any means. However, you do get what you pay for with the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM.

This is a very good zoom lens that covers a useful range while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout its focal length range. It’s particularly well suited as a travel lens, with an optical image stabilization system that allows for handheld shooting in low light conditions even at slow shutter speeds.

The optical quality delivered by this lens is impressive, and wide open it’s very sharp in the center and close to that on the edges of the frame too. It’s also impressively distortion-free for a zoom lens, with minimal vignetting too. Its autofocus motor is fast, quiet, and very accurate.

7. Canon RF 24–240mm F4-6.3 is USM Lens

Features

  • Brand: Canon
  • Lens Type: Mirror Lens
  • Compatible Mountings: Canon RF
  • Camera Lens Description: 240 Millimeters
  • Maximum Focal Length: 240 Millimeters

The Canon EF-S 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 IS lens is a high-performance, large-aperture zoom lens designed specifically for EOS APS-C format DSLRs. The 10x zoom range covers the equivalent of 38-380mm focal length in 35mm format, making it ideal for travel and everyday photography. It also features a built-in circular aperture diaphragm with seven blades, and a stepping motor (lead screw-type STM) that supports the Canon EOS Movie Servo AF function to provide smooth and quiet continuous autofocusing during video shooting.

This lens is excellent for travel and is great for getting wide-angle shots as well as zoomed-in telephoto images. As far as image quality goes, it’s quite good! There is some barrel distortion at 24mm and some pincushion distortion when fully zoomed out. But both of these are easily corrected in post-processing software such as Lightroom or Photoshop.

The focus ring is smooth and there are always two rings so you don’t have to worry about losing your place while focusing manually if you decide to use autofocus instead of manual focus later on in an event or shoot.

8. Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens

Features

  • Brand: Canon
  • Lens Type: Telephoto
  • Compatible Mountings: Canon EF
  • Camera Lens Description: 9
  • Maximum Focal Length: 400 Millimeters

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is the replacement for the very popular Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens and improves upon its predecessor in every way. This lens update is all about image quality with improved AF performance thrown in for good measure.

The new Canon 100-400 II has a new top-notch fluorite element that contributes to a reduction in size, weight, and chromatic aberration, but most of the changes are internal with improved coatings and weather sealing being the biggest noticeable changes from an external perspective.

Internally, this lens uses one Fluorite element and one Super UD element to reduce chromatic aberrations to achieve excellent image sharpness and clarity. The lens has a nine-blade circular aperture diaphragm that provides beautiful, soft backgrounds and it has a minimum focusing distance of 3.2 ft./0.98m across the entire zoom range (which results in a maximum magnification ratio of 0.31x).

It has a zoom lock lever that can be easily engaged when you want to transport the lens and an improved zoom torque adjustment ring allows easy setting of zoom tension.

9. Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

Features

  • Brand: Canon
  • Lens Type: Telephoto
  • Compatible Mountings: Canon EF
  • Camera Lens Description: 300 Millimeters
  • Maximum Focal Length: 300 Millimeters

The Canon 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM is a high-quality telephoto zoom lens. It is designed for use with APS-C DSLRs, which have a 1.6x crop factor, so it has an effective focal length of 112-480mm.

It’s well built and comes with a lens hood and case. The lens is not sealed against dust or moisture though so it will not fare well in wet conditions. The focusing motor is near silent and smooth, making this ideal for video recording if your camera provides continuous AF mode during video recording (not the case on any Canon DSLR).

The IS system provides 2 to 3 stops of extra stability, which can be particularly useful when shooting at longer focal lengths.

It performs well in good light, but as you stop down towards F8 it gets soft in the corners until about F11 when everything is sharp again. Chromatic aberration is low (the blue and purple fringing that can occur around high contrast subjects) and there’s no vignetting (darkening of the corners). The bokeh (out of focus areas) looks good too, with a very smooth-looking background blur at wide apertures.

10. Rokinon RK12M-M 12mm F2.0 NCS CS Ultra Wide Angle Fixed Lens

Features

  • Brand: Rokinon
  • Focal Length Description: 2.32” (59.0mm)
  • Lens Type: Wide Angle
  • Compatible Mountings: Canon EF-M
  • Maximum Focal Length: 12 Millimeters

Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS Lens for Micro Four Thirds (Black) is a prime wide-angle lens designed specifically for use with Micro Four Thirds sized image sensors. Providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 24mm and a broad 98.9° angle of view, this lens is ideally suited for architectural, interior, and landscape images.

The fast f/2.0 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions while also affording increased control over the depth of field for isolating subject matter. Three extra-low dispersion elements have been incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
